  • Sweet Potato Challenge

I know this is gonna be nigh on impossible in my neck of the woods but I'm gonna give it a go for next year and would be great if any other grapes fancied joining me in this challenge.
The challenge is to propagate your own slips from a shop bought SP then to grow tubers from these slips. I did say it was gonna be a challenge......Good luck to anyone taking the plunge.

Can I play please? Here is one I prepared earlier!

I can't remember when I started it, maybe January. I had 2 sweet potatoes, cut them in half and suspended them in water. Only one has shooted, 2 others have roots and the 4th is sleeping! Its a long haul, start early

Brilliant!......I have done exactly the same as you tonight except I haven't cut it in half. I just want to log how long it takes to sprout & how long the slips take to root...........in preparation for next year. I need something to do over Ch*******s.

One more thing, give your SPs a good scrub before you try to grow them as they may have growth inhibitors on the skin.

The roots and shoots seem to come from "eyes" on the sweet potato, like ordinary potatoes. Even the roots come from the outer skin of the SP, and not from the inner flesh. When choosing supermarket SPs I'm going to look for those with lots of eyes, rather than the smooth skinned ones and if I can find organic ones I'll choose those as they are less likely to have been treated with something to stop them sprouting.
                Let the Challenge begin!!

Just wondered if it would be benificial if the 2 threads were merged.

That's up to you but the Challenge part of your thread might be lost. After all, I doubt that anyone has shown much interest in what happened to my little experiment recently - so why would they start looking again now?

                      Count me in BigMally.

I will need something to do while I wait to hear if I have got my allotment this weekend.

Well, I'll leave it up to the mods to merge if they wish. I'm still gonna give it a bash though. I'm a G4 punishment.

Good luck Andy, it's a perfect time to get one in my experience. Gives you time to plan and prepare for next season.

Thanks BigMally - I hope to hear something on Saturday when the committe members go to get the key back from the existing plotholder, but they have warned me that she still has the right to appeal.

They are convinced that the appeal will fail as she hasn't been near the site for many months, but it will still take me further through the season by the time it is all worked through.

I have windowsills, garden tables and a blow away absolutely groaning with new plants looking for a home, so I hope it won't take too long
