    Sweet pepper tasted vile

    Picked one of my small green bell peppers yesterday washed it and bit into it. It was kind of thin walled and chewy rather than crunchy and tasted very bitter. I was unable to eat all of it.

    Was it too young and small do you think? It was about the size of the mini peppers you get in shops.

    Also something I noticed, it had NO seeds in it whatsoever, unlike a half wet rotted one I discarded but got the good seeds from before throwing.

    Do they need to ripen longer?

    if it was green, it was unripe, and it will be bitter.
    if it was small, it was really unripe.
    if it looks like the red/orange/yellow ones in the shop, it will be ripe.

      Sounds like it was an immature one, to me. Your fault for being impatient!

      (Not that I've ever grown any, myself, so I don't really know what I'm talking about! )

          My 'orange bell' sweet peppers have been small and green for months as well. I think it's the cold, rainy weather. Peppers like it hot so it will be a struggle for them this summer.

              Not necessarily, it depends on the variety. Also the final (ripe) colour will depend on the variety too, some never change from green, some go orange, some yellow, some red etc and this year I'm growing a chocolate variety.

              Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

              Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                I am growing Carnival, Green first and edible, then red, still edible and the occasional yellow/orange also edible. At the moment though they wouldn't make good peas.

                  Look on the bright side... at least you have peppers to harvest. Mine just haven't grown this year... none of them

                    Growing California Wonder, Etudia and Carne di Torro Rosso and all are doing well in the poly but all are still green.

                    I've bough green peppers from the shop before and they're lovely. How do you know if you're meant to wait for your peppers to turn a different colour before eating when it doesn't say so on the packet?

                        You can eat them whenever although they tend to get sweeter (and in my oppinion nicer) if you let them ripen. I pick some green and some other colours as I need them though.

                          in my experience, the pepper can swell and get to a decent size pretty quick then take 4-6 weeks to ripen and change colour.

                          akin to tomatoes - yer just badly wanna get one off cus they are the right size but htey are green - so yer dont.
