Default Sweet Peas - Novice Alert!!!

At last, I've finally gotten round to my first proper post and as previously warned in my intoduction, this is (PROBABLY) a daft question.

Are sweet peas ok to eat? I always thought they were and am sure I nibbled on them at my last house. It's just that I read somewhere online that they contained something that we should aviod.

Before you start nibbling, found this.........

'They definitely appear on all lists of poisonous plants that I've seen! Here's what supposedly can happen if you eat them: "Upon ingestion, causes permanent paralysis, slow and weak pulse, shallow breathing, pain, weakness, tremors, excitement, and convulsions."

They eyes on your avatar? Morrissey?

On my packet of sweetpeas, it says "poisonous, harmful if eaten". That is a strong warning to me, I would be smelling them, not scoffing them!
