  • Strawberry Advice?

I really wanted some strawberries this year so I've bought a green plastic bag planter and a small prop and seed kit. I sowed them 8 weeks ago now and they're only about 2cm high and going very slowly. My question is will I get any fruit from these this year or have I left it too late, shall I go and buy some plants or runners so I make sure I get some this summer? I could always pot the seedlings later in some small trays I have on a wall.

You're very close to me - do you want any runners? (Pegasus). I have a load on my new allotment.

I grew alpine strawberries from seed - they fruited, but my ready-bought plants fruited a lot more.

edit: I'm based in Caerphilly - but work in Cardiff (town centre)..

It's always best to let plants grown from seed have a year to themselves before you crop them. You can take fruits from those that came from runners in their first year though. I'd take Chris up on his kind offer! Well done that Grape!

Do'h damn my impatience. Thank you for the lovely offer, but I've just been out and bought 12 runners for a few quid and so I've put them in the planter. The seedlings will be cared for and hopefully next year they'll come good. I take it starwberry plants can be left where they are all year round or do they need some attention.

chrismarks thanks for the very kind offer very appreciated, I'll bear it in mind if everything goes boobies up.

aye, they are very hardy - mine are out all the time - don't even bother covering them with anything. They've burst back into life at home now - was shocked when I came across so many on the plot!

No prob, drop me a pm if you'd like any
