Grow Your Own Magazine

Hi all
Am wondering if anyone can advise. My first year of growing vegetables and am sooooo enjoying it! My Wilja Second Earlies are in tubs and have had brilliant results. What I want to do is plant some ready for Christmas - have read on here that this can be done. My questions are: at what size should I dig my 'seed tatties' up and store them - small/medium? I understand they need to be put in the fridge in a brown paper bag and kept cool but not frozen obviously! How long can I keep them in the fridge for and do they need to be 'chitted' before putting in the containers? Have got some fleece in readiness to combat possible frost, am not sure when to plant them?

Hi Linda, you don't need to chit the potatoes if you are planting them for Christmas & I would keep them in the fridge until around the end of August/beginning Sept., that way they should have been cold long enough & have enough time to grow ready for Christmas.

Cheers Sue, I wasn't sure whether they would keep 4-6 weeks in the fridge or not!! Just out of interest how long would they keep do you know? Would you recommend picking small ones or medium ones?

Not sure how long they keep but around a month is about right I think. Usually people say choose some about the size of a large egg so it depends on the size of yours whether that's small or medium!

Brilliant, thanks for that Sue, if they need to go in end of August then I might wait for a week and then they will only be in the fridge 3 weeks! Isn't this fun? Have only just started this year and am soooo enjoying it!!

hi Linda - yes it's brilliant isnt it growing your own veg? Just dug up the remainder of my spuds but on the menu for tea tonight is home grown courgette, tomatoes, pepper and chillies beats your local supermarket anyday! dexterdog
