    Storing Cabbage

    I have a few cabbage that I'm really pleased with. They're ready for picking now but I can't cope with them all in one go and would love to keep some for later use.

    It our first year growing and a few people on the site have said they've been growing for years and never managed to grow cabbage as good as ours.

    Can I store cabbage ? If so for how long and what's the best way to store it ?

      A lot depends on what type of cabbage they are. Can you let us know the variety??

          I think you can cut them and store them in nets in a cool place (cellar/garage/pantry). Or leave them in the ground, they should 'stand' for a while without spoiling.

            I just leave my cabbage in the ground and cut them as I want them Bob.

              Thanks guys n gals

              I may try cuttign some now and storing them and leaving some inthe ground. The problem is the cabbage whites are still givign them a bashing

              I'll try both methods and see what works best.

                I've cooked and drained cabbage, then froze in sizes of a few portions. It seems to work - I fry them after letting them stand to defrost for a while.

                  I've grown Kilaxy clubroot resistant cabbages and they stand for ages before bolting.
                  I would just leave them in the ground and cut them as necessary. If you really need the space for another crop you could try pulling them up and suspending them by their roots in a cool place such as a garage.

                  From memory, I'm sure I've managed to keep mine into the new year just left growing in the allotment!

                    In nets in a root cellar used to be the traditional way I think. You could always transplant them into a bucket safe in a shed I suppose.
                    There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.
