  • A silly squash question...

How big are squashes supposed to get before you harvest them?

Courgettes i know but I'm growing a few other types of squash and I'm not sure when I'm supposed to harvest them in particular spaghetti squash, how big is it supposed to be?

    Thanks

My understanding with winter squash is you leave it on the plant until the the first frosts arrive then harvest the lot

Note, leave at least two inches of stem attached to the squash when harvesting and dont lift them by the stem, this will aid storage

Far to early for winter squash to be ready yet. Summer squash tend to be used like courgettes and use when big enough for your personal use.

Please excuse this (slight) hijack of your thread, Bex. ()
I have some squash plants but they are still quite small...(largest is about 4inches high) I have just transfered them into bigger pots outside and plan to plant them in the ground when they are ready. They were very slow germinating, hence the small size.
Just wondered, is it too late do you think?

Thanks for the replies, I'm not to sure about this whole summer/winter thing. I'll leave it on the plant then.

Summer squash have thin skins (like courgettes)
Winter squash have thick skins, so that they store (all winter)
