  • Shrinking leaves?!

    Hi everyone,

Im new to this site and Id just like to say Ive found these forums very interesting and informative, so thank you!

Ive never grown a thing in my life and now all of a sudden I have become obsessed with growing my own veg, thanks to the article for potato bags in GYO a few weeks back! I only have a small balcony as I live in a second floor flat so Im starting off on my windowsill as I have the sun for most of the day.

My potatoes (due to arrive soon) will be going out onto the balcony, I have 1 big 'Shirley' tomato plant which has just got its first flowers, and 4 'Gardeners Delight' which are only little (about 15cm). Ive been amazed at how well they have grown on the windowsill and it seems everytime I look at them, they have grown more!

The problem is, just over the last couple of days, I have started putting them outside to harden them off and the leaves have all started to shrivel up! And I dont understand what has caused this. The Shirley plant is still fine but its the smaller Gardeners Delight ones that its happening to. Im really hoping this doesnt mean they are dying but I dont understand whats happening to them, so I was wondering if anyone could suggest anything??

(I also think Ive got a bit carried away with this 'grow your own veg' malarki cos my windowsills are full!)

    Very many thanks
    Kim

I think it's too early to start hardening off tomatoes Kim. I've been advised not to do that until next month.

Kim, we don't know where you are but that's a sign of them being too cold or windy.

Zazen999 - That could explain it, as it happened after I had put them outside for the day. Thanks.
