  • Should my asparagus be showing yet?

because it's not! I can't remember when the first shoots normally appear. I'm wondering if I've managed to kill them all...

It will be late this year as the weather has been so rubbish so don't worry.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I have had one teeny stem up for about a week - guess you must be a few weeks behind us?

As Zaz said on Twitter this morning, we are a few weeks behind in the growing season as the temperatures have been somewhat cooler than normal.

Probably several PP, yes. Climate here is quite like the sout of the UK, except we've been luckier this winter I think.

So I'm not going to worry just yet then, thanks . Just out of interest - I chucked a smattering of straw from the chicken shed down on the asparagus this morning - literally a single straw depth - is this likely to cause any problems since it's obviously not rotted?

No, the straw won't cause any problems to the asparagus bed - more likely to be a nuisance blowing around the garden.

I just found four more little spindly fronds. The cat rolled on one, but it survived! Only another few years and we can eat some....

Mine should be ready for picking this year. I'll be gutted if they don't show after waiting so long

Ah, but I've cunningly covered the bed with debris netting for now, to keep the chickens, cats and neighbour's goat off it, so it'll collect all the mess for me! I hope

Grrrr, all I've got is dead twigs from last year, and naughty strawberries which were ripped up weeks ago but seem to have reincarnated!
