The Winter Solstice is generally the 22nd December, but in some years can be 21st.

Don't forget that it's traditional to plant your garlic on this day - the old country lore: "Plant on the shortest (day) and harvest on the longest"

That's ok - anytime between 21st Sept and 22nd Dec [autumn and winter solstices] seems to give the best harvest.

I always think it's the 21st (or thereabouts)

Did anyone manager to get their garlic in, in December last year? No chance around by us.

Mine are in modules, with green shoots on (some with roots going upwards - oops, planted upside down).

It's 22nd - that's my birthday, and when I was a kid I used to think my birthday was shorter than anyone else's!!

It's one of my favourite days. I love the thought of the days getting longer again. It's actuallyl 5.30am on 22nd.

December 22 is a Solstice Day in 2011

What is the difference between planting garlic in winter, and planting them in spring?
I was always told to plant them in the spring thats all....

Garlic needs a frost I believe, or the bulb won't split into individual cloves.

Correct me if I'm wrong peeps.
