Forewarned is Forearmed: Veggies Owned by Monsanto

This link details all the seed that is owned in the USA and Canada by Monsanto - so genetically if you tried to save from it - they would still own it and any of it's babies. If you grow it you are funding people who copyright seed and who sell sterile seed to the world so that they come back to them time and time again. Capitalism at it's best/worst.

Well, I say the link details all the seed - it details some of the seed. If you go onto the Monsanto site - and click on the 'Professional Growers' 'Products' section, the list is much larger.

I'd post the UK version - but that part of the relevant site is 'under construction' Yeah, course it is

Thanks zaz. I will avoid the Monsanto seeds like the plague. But you make a couple of biased and unfactual points in your thread which take away from your on message........

    Loving my allotment!

Well, it's my thread and I'm sure people can make their own minds up.

      Which bits are unfactual?

Thanks Zazen. I've known about the evil doings of Monsanto for some time but didn't realise how insidious the progress has been.

I shall be printing the list off on the Seminis product list and checking all my seeds in future. Don't buy plants on the whole. Is there any way that we can make sure they don't get given away as freebies?

On the subject of Monsanto, I recently learned from my Canadian relatives that in the USA they have been forced to drop the terms biodegradable and environmentally friendly in ads promoting Roundup. I think the French have also taken similar action.

Thankfully there's nothing on that list that I'm growing but there were a few surprises.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                  Vegetables Owned by Monsanto

Below is a quote taken from the above page. I suppose, if we are saving our own seed whether from this company or any other, we are cutting down the profit they can make from new sales, rightly or wrongly. With this in mind, do we want to ban them from seeds swaps? Some purchased plants also say you cannot propagate from cuttings because of plant breeder's rights.

Please understand that Monsanto only owns the trademark names for these “heirloom” varieties. This stretegic move holds two advantages for Monsanto:

1.) prevents new companies from naming new varieties with these or very similar names.

2.) it is an effort to stop lucrative sales by these other companies trying to leverage the heirloom name and consumer loyalty for those heirloom varieties.

If you have left over seeds, do not be reluctant to plant them. Monsanto will only profit from customers purchasing these varieties from companies that are stocking seeds obtained directly from Monsanto or one of its distributors.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Royal Chantenay? Does that mean all Royal Chantenays are owned by them??? (Sorry had a long day and easily confused, so please correct me if I have wrong end of the stick)

I am confused? (Yes, I know, it doesn't take much)

But is this a good thing or just a cooperative conglomerate getting its own way?

I think in terms of biodiversity and the ability to save and swap seeds then Monsanto is not good news.
I am hoping to develop a group of favourite veggies that I grow and save seeds from and which do well on my plots - in other words my own landraces. That is the old way to do things

I've added some links, perhaps when Newton tells us which bits aren't factual you will have other links to look at.

Yes - I'm gutted. I love these carrots.

Strangely enough - the seeds I saved from them 2 years ago never germinated. Not one of them. Hmm.....

Going through my box of seeds now.
