  • Scorched potato plants. Can they recover?

    Hello,
Complete newbie here. For the first time in my adult life I have a small garden to grow veg but it is almost entirely paved so I'm restricted to containers. I planted maincrop potatoes in early march in bags (salad blue and pink fir apples). I'm just north of London. They had been going big guns with a lot of thick foliage and had just finished flowering.
The recent severe heat coupled with travel has left them a little scorched. Several dead or discolored branches but the majority of the plants are alive (if much less attractive than before). I dug up one bag early, the yield was not great but but the spuds were delicious and there were still some small forming tubers. If I trim off the dead and dying foliage is it worth letting them continue for another month or would I be better pulling them now?
    Thanks,
    Ed

I'd leave them, keep feeding and watering and for as long as they've got foliage this will help to swell the tubers.

      Welcome to the Vine.

As said above feed and water well. At this stage in their growth cycle a high potash feed such as tomorite will help.

        Great, thanks!
How often do you feed them? I've been quite cautious as have been warned that overfeeding can do more harm than good.
Will give them some tomrite tomorrow.

I feed mine once a week, make sure you give them plenty of water.

IMO feeding the wrong fertiliser can cause problems but I don't go along with 'over feeding' per se. Plants are not human and will not gorge themselves, I find they take up what they need.

Spraying potato plant leaves with something high in potassium such as citrus feed will cause tuber growth

Are you sure it's not just the plants naturally dying back rather than sun or wind damage? If they have already flowered they will die... their life cycle is over. Once the foliage is dead the spuds will not grow any bigger, but the longer they are in the ground, the more susceptible they are to attack by disease and pests. Personally I would start harvesting now.

Yes trim off the dead yellow droopy branches, leave the greenery to grow on as long as it can. That's what I do,to get the potatoes to grow as big as possible. I've trimmed off all the foliage of about 8 potato bags in my garden,I'm harvesting them as I need them, not sure how long you can store them like that? I think I have to many other attractants around the patio for bugs to notice them though, they're good.
