Default Samphire

I've just bought two samphire plants from Victoriana Nursery, mail order. This is something I've never grown before - does anyone have any experience of growing it, or any advice? Thanks.

Hi Mat. I know that they grow it commercially on salt water marsh flats. We used to sell it at our Fishmongers in Derby.
Try this link, it seems to have a bit more info. Good luck and let me know how you get on with it. Minty http://www.pfaf.org/database/plants....hmum+maritimum

I bought it last year from Waitrose as a cut veg and found it REALLY salty.
I can imagine it would go with fish though. ( and lots of cream and garlic!!!) ( quick boil rather than steam may reduce the saltiness??)
Well worth a try....I like the idea of different veg- hope it grows well for you and you enjoy it....give us a recipe when you can!!

OH says it is just like salty string beans, fresh and crispy, he says looks and tastes like asparagus. There's loads of it up in N.Norfolk where he works

Upriver in the Cleddau - I found some in the pill in Llangwm, but there is probably some in most of the pills all the way up and in the Western and Eastern arms

Can't remember what time of year it was, but perhaps its around all year

Obviously harvest sparingly... but enjoy if you find some

Thanks for that VF - was hoping I had a grape close-by when I saw your post but I see you are not a 'local'

Thanks Minty,

Have just looked at it, wonder how successful it is.

Samphire is a wonderful dish, as I'm sure you know, I cannot imagine it will taste the same growing in Milton Keynes, but I'm going to try it. Victoriana cannot deliver until May 08, have ordered it though.
