  • Rusty coloured marks on second earlies?

    I have just dug up the remainder of my second earlies (International Kidney) and had a mahoosive harvest but some of them seem to have rusty coloured marks on the skin. I have scratched away the outer layer of skin and it doesn't seem to go through to rest of the potato. Have had a look on the internet and it doesn't look like scab either. Any ideas what might have caused this and can I still use them/store them?

      I thought International Kidney (Jersey Royals) were maincrop that are usually lifted immature 'in the green' as an early. If left to mature as a maincrop they should store fine.

      The brown marks can sometimes be caused by clay or red sand pockets in soil or it may be that because they have been lifted immature the skin hasn't had a chance to fully form?
      You usually scrape the loose skin off before cooking anyway!

        Thanks Snadger, I did buy them as second earlies but perhaps you can keep them in as maincrop. They seemed ready to dig up as some of them were the size of baking potatoes Interesting what you say about clay, hadn't heard of that before and I do have clay soil at the bottom of the raised beds, so you may well be right
