  • Ripening sweetcorn

The summer is gone here in Scotland!!! I still have unripened corn in the garden - can I ripen them on the windowsill?
    Thanks

I'd leave them on the plant, there's still plenty of time for them to ripen outdoors. - I've been known to pick fresh sweetcorn for a bonfire night barbie, though I accept I'm further south. Once sweetcorn is picked the sugars immediately begin to turn to starch, which is why homegrown tastes so much better than shop bought, if you pick them then this process would begin straight away so even if they did ripen (and I'm not convinced that they would) they wouldn't be worth eating. Plenty of that lovely, buttery, Autumn sunshine is what they need..........fingers crossed.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Leave them on the plants, have a feel now and then, and pick when the cob feels reasonably full. Straight from the plot to the pan - you can't beat it. Just had some tonight for my dinner.

Me too, about 20-30 minutes from plot to plate

Gradually wading through my 25 cobs!! Absolutely beautiful this year, given the sun.

As everyone has said Tracey I would leave them on the plants for a bit yet. Some of mine are not quite ready, but I'm normally eating them into October.

PS Mine are inside a polytunnel! otherwise I couldn't grow them this far north.

Last year someone suggested putting cut off bottles over the cobs if it turns cold..helps with mice as well they said? might be an idea for you?

Coming to the end of 80 plants here!...never can grow too much..us, kids, chooks, guinea pig...we all love the stuff.
