  • Recommend runner bean variety

    Every year I grow Scarlet emperor which is fantastic but want to try one other aswell but dont know which one?

    Last year I did try the french bean/runner cross firestorm which was poor.

    I recommend White Lady, great yield and good taste - edible even when quite big, if you string them

    They don't need stringing when they're younger/thinner though.

      Desiree is a white bean, white flowered variety which I grow regularly. Can be tricky to get the moisture levels right for germination, so I cam going to trying the chitting method described elsewhere on here for peas.

        I grow lady di and St george as they always set well and stay stringless for a long time even in a dry summer

          For me the main issue with runners is the hard part that forms round the seeds in older beans, which can't be got out by removing the strings. Las year I grew the white flowered stringless variety Stardust which is billed as not having this feature and they were great.
