  • RE Useing Spud Soil Proplem.

    I mean Problem

Last year i grew new potatos in bags and i re-used the compost this year in a few pots and to fill up a raised bed. however when i used the last of it to topup the raised bed i found tiny wee spuds. just 4 but 4 healthy little spuds.. there has been no leaves or big roots visible. the soil was check over as i was removeing the crop last year where have they come from do you think they have just grown from the odd root?

and should i remove the soil i used in the pots ?

I always miss a few tiny ones during the harvest therefore I find it best to riddle my compost before reuse to get rid of them.

I would leave the compost where it is and if you get any volunteers decide then whether to remove the plant or not.

I thought there was no problem as long as the soil wasn't used for tomatoes. I usually let the volunteers alone and pick them during the summer/autumn when I think they're ready. So far, while they've been few, they haven't done us any harm!
