  • A Quick Watering Question ...

Now that I've planted out my runner beans (into ground) - should I need to water them?

Also, same question re raised beds (on top of soil) - to water or not .....?
    (Have pumpkin/courgette/dwarf French beans/sweet corn/leeks (plants) - and various
    seeds sown (lettuce/rocket/radish/spring onions) .....?

I puddle everything in when I plant out and then mulch well which means I don't really need to water afterwards. Too much watering leads to shallow roots bug you want them to seek deeper moisture. Obviously it's different in tubs.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Well, it's hard to say, Susie. A lot depends on what your soil is like, how deep it is, how much organic matter there is in it, how close together all your plants are, whether they are sheltered or constantly dried out by wind and sun.
For instance, saladings tend to need watering as they grow fast, have shallow roots, and are pulled young before they develop much of a root system, because you're growing them to eat their leaves, but squashes and beans should be planted with loads of organic matter underneath them, which will retain a lot of moisture.

        Thanks

Runners had plenty of organic matter dug in well before planting. I puddled them in. It's clay soil here ....
Is it too late to put a mulch around them?

Salads I'll just water as they get going then.

Runner beans like lots of water. So the only thing I do special with them is to bury an upended 2-litre bottle with the bottom cut off in the middle of the plants. I fill the bottles with water whenever I remember. This keeps lots of moisture in the bed about a spade depth down, the roots soon find it and the plants grow happily.

Unless the soil is dry about 4ins down (dig a small hole to see) I don't water anything, apart from new transplants.

My father always said, dont water anything planted in the ground. The roots will find thir own level. If you start watering the roots will stay shallow where the surface water is.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
