  • Purple radishes

Has anyone else grown the purple radishes that came with the magazine a couple of months ago?
We sampled ours yesterday and frankly they were disgusting.
They were really hot and peppery which was great, but had an underlying flavour that was really horrid. I ended up pulling the lot up and composting them.
At least it makes a little extra space for my onion sets
Has anyone else had different results?

I've planted a load but they're not ready yet. Fingers crossed ours will taste better otherwise they too will be on the compost heap. Had great hopes for them as they're supposed to store for winter use.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

99% of my radishes go on the compost heap. We tried them again this year but nope - still wasn't working. Gave some away and then binned the rest.

Yes, we love radishes but only really eat them if it's sunny so with the summer we haven't had again.......Shan't bother I think next year as the space can be used more productively for other stuff.

That's just reinforced my theory about free seeds ... why give them away? If they were good enough to sell, they'd be selling them.

I'm a dissenting voice on this. I grew them and thought they were great but I don't think you're supposed to eat them like you would an apple. Chop them up in stir-fries or grate them into soup.

I pulled all mine up too. The one I liked best was French Breakfast. I agree with TS and wonder if they're giving them away because they don't sell.

It's important to remember that these are winter type raddish and therefore won't be the same as the ones we're used to in the summer but I'll reserve judgement until I've tasted mine but if they're not nice raw I'll slice them into a stir fry and try them like that instead!

Sent some to my nephew to grow (niece loves radishes) and had a taste while I was at their place.

He thought they were "OK. Bit hot"
She thought they were "Very hot!"
I thought they had an underlying taste of having gone off.

Anybody tried them roasted or anything?
