This year I grew Goldensweet mangetout. A surprising number of the pods were purple (actually, so many were that for a while I thought that's the way they were supposed to be until I started getting light green ones and checked the packet). I've saved seed from them (both the green and the purple podded). What's the likelihood that if I plant the ones from the purple pods that I'll get ones that only/primarily produce purple mangetout? They were beautiful plants!

You are right to assume that the lemon / pale yellow ones are the correct ones but the purple ones do sound lovely. Did they taste nice and have the lovely tender texture of mange tout? You should be lucky with your seed saving as peas tend to pollinate themselves before the flowers even emerge properly so almost always come true to type - goodness knows what had happened with your purple ones in the first place. Did you buy them or were they previously saved by a friend? Also, do you have any photos, they sound lovely.

I bought them from Thompson & Morgan. They were lovely plants because they had the other characteristics of Goldensweet (lighter green stems and red nodes), but with purple pods. They tasted just fine. But unfortunately I don't have any photos!Hill of Beans updated April 18thComment

The only way to find out is to sow them next year.Comment

They probably will but again you might get the Mendel split of a quarter to three quarters. If you like the purples. save some each year.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.
