  • Pots for tomato/pepper/chilli plants

I want to pot all my toms/peppers/chilli plants in GH
Unsure about what size best to use - was going to buy 11litre pots : is that size ok for all? (10 pots for £25.69 - is that reasonable ...?)
    Thanks!

    Hi Susie

I think 11 litres is on the small side for greenhouse tomatoes, you will be watering twice a day, I think you will be better with 20litre pots

11 litres are fine for peppers and chillies, but I agree they are a bit small for tomatoes unless you can rig them to a self watering system.

These are slightly cheaper than the ones you have found and free delivery over £20:

Go to Bee and Q and get yourself some of the hideoys orange buckets (I know they are hideous cause I have some) they are selling them for £1 eash at the moment. More space and if you feel the urge you could always cut the bottom off and use them with a grow bag.

Lumpy, they also have them in black in the builders section.
I use these to grow my tomatoes in the greenhouse.

I recycle supermarket flower buckets for most everything nowadays. You just have to make holes in the bases.

I get mine free from the local Co op but some s/markets charge 99p for about 10 of them. You just have to lurk by the flowers 'til you see someone to ask

I think they are about 25 ltr but I would not stake my life on it. They are larger than your normal kitchen bucket so......

So, for now, with pepper and chilli plants in mind, just ordered from Amaz-n - 10 x 11 litre black square pots £ 2.13 each and free delivery.
Will checkout bee'nq for large builders buckets next time I'm going that way.
Have had an idea for my toms: potato grow bags - 4 x plants to each bag (nice, deep compost) with canes in each corner for their growing supports.
                        Think that's ok?
Being square shaped bags means I can fit more closer together to make better use of GH space.

4 tomato plants in one potato bag is very crowded. Tomatoes ideally need more space than that - if you crowd them too much you can get problems later in the season with moulds (botrytis and blight) particularly if the weather is warm and damp.

I am with Thelma #8 providing you can get to your GH once a day black flower buckets for everything I have used them for years and never had a problem and at 99p for 8 they beat everything else for price.

One point they come in I think 3 sizes as a rule you want the larger 12ltr ones, also good for runner beans and new potatoes.

I didn't realise they came in three sizes, I've only ever seen two. I used the largest ones I have (may be the 10 litre) for most things last year and had no problems - just make sure you keep up with the watering and for tomatoes don't let the plants go too crazy!
