potatos in compost bags.

Arn't Anya second early potatoes ?

that seems very strange to me (not that i know much about anything of course!). I did potatoes in compost bags too and have had LOADS of really good sized ones already. Hopefully someone who knows more than me - well that's most everyone of course! - can help you out...

I have been taking some out this week as i wondered if there were any there as the plants are trying to flower here and there

i used asda compost and asda compost bags,the bag i attacked was planted good friday, 3 seed potatoes, international kidney, i got a heaped plastic mixing bowl full out of the sack , i left the plants back in the bag just incase they grow (doesnt look like they will), they had many more tiny ones anout 5mm long i should have waited longer, most got were about 1.5 inches long , i have another few sacks of the int.kidneys but im leaving them a bit longer till mid july at least

I had a look in some of the others, i have some red ones in a couple of sacks about 1/2 inch ,lots of them though....(labels fell off no idea of type but i know there was bonnie dundee or red duke of york there somewere, but also some tesco ones), but the king edward, maris piper, rooster, swift all have none i could find ( didnt disturb them much ) , but it was easy to find them in the jersey royal type

mot of mine are in the compost sacks, some in netto compost, some in asda compost,using potato fertiliser when planting, i also have a few 300L pots full with the king edwards and marris pipers in, nothing in there either but again didnt look that hard

I think its just very early for some types, best to wait longer , i didint think mine would have any till about mid july

had a furtle in mine the other day..... found zilch.... leaving a few more weeks then having another furtle.

Odd that you had plenty of top growth but nothing underneath. Are you sure there was nothing as it's easy to miss small spuds and once they get going they really develop quickly. this year I've grown some rocket potatoes in bags and tubs. I started them off in the greenhouse then put them outdoors to harden off. My average yield is about 1lb per seed tuber which isn't great but i did get them a week or so earlier than ones planted in the garden under black polythene. If you have to buy your compost it's a very expensive way to get new potatoes and if you feed them as well....

I had a furtle in my potato sacks today, all were planted 22/03/09my Charlottes seem to have nothing other than the occasional pea sized spud, my Carlingford which are supposed to be a second early, and were checked by being frosted, have ping-pong ball sized potatoes in there. I am leaving them for at least another week, but am a little confused by the lack of Charlotte. I was hoping to be harvesting them about now.
