  • potato query?

Having grown potatoes for more years than I can remember I have got a query. On lifting my early crop I could hear a cracking noise and when I looked at the potatoes they were virtually cracking before my eyes, deep cracks which makes them virtually unusable. Never seen or heard of this before, has anyone any ideas why this should happen?

Hello and welcome to the vine Norman

I've heard of 'Growth cracks' but never seen them happening as the potatoes come out the ground. strange.

I think it's a water after drought thing, you've removed them from the soil which was keeping them under some pressure. Does that sound like it might apply?Wood does it sometimes. I had a couple do it last year, they were in my second earlies and came up absolutely huge after all the water we had.
