  • Potato and onion help required please

Hi, I am very new and very green to vegtable growing and planted a couple of new potatoes in a growbag a month or so ago. I now have plants growing out of the top of the bag. How do I know when I will get potatoes? Do they pop up out of the bag or, do I need to rummage for them under the plants. Same with the onions, I have green leaves sticking up but dont know if any more onions are in there than I planted in the first place LOL!

If someone can please offer some advice I would be very grateful.
    Thank you

You will need to give your potatoes about 12 weeks growing time before there's much underneath to harvest. After that time, rummage around in the compost underneath - they should be loverly!

If you planted onion sets you will get one onion per set. If you sowed seed, well, it's one per seed but you have to thin them out in this case. Good luck with them.

Make sure your potatoes are covered with compost,if they are not covered they go green and are poisonous.

        Thanks

Thanks you for your help, I will leave it a while longer and then have a rummage for my potatoes.

Still a little early for your potato yet - if they are an "early" type of potato you are best harvesting a couple of weeks after they have started flowering. If they are a "main crop" then you'll wait a little longer until the foliage dies down.

Whether you get to see the onions depends on how far you planted them - i usually plant my sets with the tip of the set still pocking out of the soil and usually get to see them bulking up as the top of half the onion is above ground. Plant them lower andthey'll be wholly underground.

Have a careful poke by all means - but if you planted just a month ago they won't have bulked up yet.
