I want to grow daff and tulips on allotment for cut flowers next year but I lack the space for a separate bed. Do you think it would be ok to grow them between my rows of leeks and garlic/onions?

Assuming you rotate your crops it would mean moving them every year or attempting to plant around them. Could you perhaps pop them in containers? We have some Daffies in containers made from old car wheels, they've been there years, are still doing well and can be moved to the place where I think they'll be most attractive that particular spring. Another thought is to plant them near any fruit bushes, if you have them, the flowers will be gone long before you need to pick the fruit and might even attract pollinators at the right time.Last edited by bluemoon; 14-10-2008, 01:03 PM.Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

I've planted hundreds of daffs on my lottie but between currant bushes.
They look fantastic in the spring, but you need to leave them for several weeks for the leaves to die back and send the nutrients back into the bulb for the following year.
Problem is that the slugs head off for cover under the dying leaves and the whole area ends up a bit of a mess, esp as they are planted up to the border of several raised beds and they flop onto whatever young veg plants I've got growing there.
Oh- and they go mouldy too

Unless you do the planting suggestions offered it sounds like the 'hough I dug them blasting bulbs up again'!
Not the greatest thing to interplant with veg of any sort.Comment

I'd avoid mixing them in with your crops, because you'll forever be digging them up. Also, daff bulbs look a bit like onions, but are poisonous.
