    To plant, or not to plant....that is the question!

    Hi everyone!

    My ground is ready, I've had it warming up for a couple of weeks under plastic.......question is, should I plant my seed potatoes tomorrow? Tonight and for the next few days the weather is going to turn VERY chilly! Should I leave them for another week?

    What does everyone think?

    I think if you KNOW it is going to be cold then wait.
    But they keep getting it wrong here....

      Thing is with spuds, you plant them around five or six inches below the soil surface, so they won't get frosted until the leaves are above the ground. If your soil is dry and workable, then plant them. Mine is cold and wet, so I'm waiting.

          Planted my earlies today. Raked out trenches and planted them in the bottom of the trenches with a trowel about 5 inches deep. That way if they show above ground and frost is forecast it's an easy job to pull some soil over the leaves for protection!

            Planted all of mine last weekend, I hope they'll be deep enough to avoid the chilly weather. They've got two chances !!

                Hello DDL, nice to see you. Mine are planted - in buckets. It's up to you. If your ground is ready you can plant. If it's too cold for you - stay at home. Looks like a cold day for planting anything to me. I always wait for an auspicious day - well that's my story. Best to Dexter.

                  Hi everyone! Good to hear from you! Thanks for your advice. Actually the weather today wasn't as bad as the forecast, but had to spend the day doing housework hoping for better weather next weekend! Woof, woof from Dexter! Bernie

                    mine were planted outside in the feb just beforre the cold spell, now the leaves are well up lets hope they survive, we had a fine sprinkling of snow last night.

                          Uh oh, I planted mine about 4 weeks ago - still no sign of em I don't want to have a rummage as its turned cold now - just hoping they're kind of hiding below the surface waiting for the weather to turn warm again
