  • Pink spots on potatoes

Sorry if this is a silly question. I’m a new gardener and I have just tipped out my first container of potatoes ...perhaps slightly premature but the foliage had died back and I thought it was worth checking one. The potatoes seem to have lots of pink spots. I had be warned about green potatoes being bad but is pink a problem too?

Some potato varieties are Whites, some Reds, some more exotic. Some common varieties like Cara are white with pink spots like yours. Do you know what variety yours have been grown from?

They look delicious! The pink is just the way that variety grows, like Chris said.

Thanks for the quick reply. They are King Edward maincrop. They’re probably not as big as they could get but it wasn’t a huge container.

I’m colour blind so the running joke in my family is that my kids have to check any meat that I’m cooking before I serve it! So while I was celebrating my potato haul this morning, my 10 year old son said he needed to break the bad news to me that the potatoes were bad because they were raw pink like meat!

Hi Ya, I would say it's natural colouring aswell as lots of varieties have the same spots. You gave me the best laugh for a long while though as I to have eye problems and had detached retinas in both eyes and thoght the magic NHS consultants have greatlt improved them I still struggle with some tasks. I planted my earlies and didn't use a line. The rows looked straight to me. Planted main crop next to them, only my lines are that close it's two rows in one so I am lifting white and red spuds together. They are still nice to eat. I'II learn. Happy gardening

Yeah, King Edwards are meant to have pink spots. They look beautiful. If you really want to freak your son out grow Highland Burgundy Reds next time. They're pink inside.
