  • Pink Fir Apple comments and advice please

    Hello

I have just harvested my first ever pink fir apple spuds, not really knowing what to expect, but certainly not expecting this! (see attachment).

I got about 9lbs from 5 tubers, ranging in size from tiny beans to this monster, and several others like it.

Presumably the strange shape is no bar to eating this one, and others like it?

    thanks

They're great as salad potatoes, roasted or fried whole - always with skins on - just give them a quick scrub. The nutty flavour makes them my favourite for taste.

Don't worry about the shape I just cut the side growths off and then eat them with the skins on. Normally potatoes that shape get broken at harvest time so you don't see that very often.

I love Pink Fir for their taste and the comedy value.

Just break off the nobbles, scrub everything with a nail brush, slice and steam them. Yum.

That looks about median in normalness for PFA, I've seen plenty stranger.... I had my first few (too small really but they were yum) this weekend....

It is the flavour that is the thing though, I can't imagine we'd put up with that untidy monster of topgrowth or the utterly bizarre tubers for something that tasted like a Vivaldi or a Rooster....

PFA are a late main crop,so you've got yours early(even for the channel islands),I've planted Anya,Harlequin,Moulin Rouge and PFA and none of them are quite ready yet, probably august before PFA are picked.

i would recommend Harlequin. This is a cross between Pink Fir Apple and Charlotte. It has the more regular shape of the Charlotte and much of the taste of the Pink Fir Apple.
