  • perpetual spinach query

How perpetual is it? I planted it last year and got soooo fed up of eating spinach!!! It was left over the winter and when i went today it still appeared to be alive. Some of the old leaves were a bit slimy so i pulled all those off but will it grow again or should I dig it up and start over?

Loves Spinach. How big does it grow?

I use perpetual spinach - boy does it keep coming

It grows as big as you let it, I keep 'cutting and coming' again and again

Perpetual Spinach and Silver Chard - two of my favourite crops - both to eat and because I can crop them over and over and over and over and over and over etc etc etc etc .
Both of these crops are still growing in my tunnel - they were both sown in March last year and planted into final position in April - I'll do the same again this year, but will keep last years going until this season's plants are ready for their first cut.
I supply between 40 and 50 boxes per week, attend local farmers markets (17 per year) and several other events, and have customers calling at the farm gate for about 5 months of the year and I plan on growing about 50 plants of each which will keep me going throughout the year.

It feels quite funny all frozen and covered in snow, but then thaws out and keeps going! bless it... and now my chooks like it too.....*wonders if that will be it's demise as nothing else has killed it yet!

Perpetual spinach aka leafbeet is a biennial. Don't expect it to go on forever, although you'll have free plants if you let it go to seed

I had it popping up all over my old allotment from a single sowing. If son-of-chard comes where you don't want it, just move them all to a bed of their own. Great crop.

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
