As someone who prefers to grow 'tall' peas rather than dwarf ones can anyone recommend a good vigorous flavourful variety.

Last year I grew 'telephone' from the real Seed Co. with great success. A lovely sweet pea even as they got older and they are open pollinated so I saved some to sow this year.
I am also growing 'Oskar' from the same place. A very early pea and very dwarf (I know you wanted tall) so I can grow a longer season. -
If you can get hold of some show perfection, these grow to about 3 mtrs and are a super cropper of really tasty peas with up to 15 peas per pod. The variety is favoured by exhibitors but is a really useful variety for the kitchenComment

I think the most "common" one is Alderman. Grows to about 5' and crops over a reasonably extended period. (Note that it won't climb by itself, unlike, say, a Runner Bean) so will need netting or somesuch onto which to clingK's Garden blog the story of the creation of our gardenComment

I found that 'Telephone' initially struggled in the early drought we had last year, but they hung on and then produced like mad once the rain came later.
If you like tall peas, I'd recommend joining the Heritage Seed Library part of Garden Organic - members get to choose half a dozen packets of seeds from the varieties which they conserve and they have a really big choice of tall peas.Comment

My Alderman were over 6 ft last year - and plump and delivious! I also grew Magnum Bonum - from the Hertiage Seed Library. I lvoet his one.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.
