  • Peas help

I am a complete novice and I'm growing peas. I have concerns about the pea moth so plan to cover the plants with fleece to stop any attacks. Will doing this stop the peas from swelling due to non pollination?

No - I have grown my peas under fleece all 2000 of them and I've always had good crops. All I would say is use the fleece as a cloche rather than letting it have contct with the peas.

Have not found pea moth to be a serious problem for me, so I don't bother taking any precautions and just live with the odd maggot in a pod. I do know that previous places I've lived it has been a case of trying to protect the crop and years ago it was usually a case of reaching for the spray. There wasn't all the nets etc that are available today. Personally I'm not keen on fleece as I find it blocks out to much light and tend to use the fine mesh.

          Peas produce nicely under net/fleece.
We get awful pea moth here, maggots in every pod. You can try growing early or late in the year to avoid infestation without nets.

I can't grow them during the summer because they always get powdery mildew too.
I rely on a very early crop (Feltham First) and that's my lot.
