    Peas, beans, corn and sq/ft gardening

    I'm having a go at sq/ft gardening in 1 of my raised beds this year for the 1st time. I know when you'd plant these in rows, ideally you'd have at least a ft between plants (maybe not so much for runner beans) but I was planning on having 4 per square.
    Would this be too many too close together or do you think they'd be ok?

    Here's a pic, top right hand side 2 are garlic, bottom 2 are shallots and then top middle-right 2 are swede and bottom middle-right 2 are hamburg parsley (never had that before)

    I've done the square foot system, but for the peas I've spaced them five to a square. That gives about eight inches between them in the system I use, but the pea varieties I'm growing get to 8 feet tall. Spaced them this close last year and they were rampant.

        Hi, I had 8 pea plants in a square last year and it worked ok as they are quite spindly plants. The attached pic shows the pea plants, second row from back, second square along with the white flowers next to the celery.




        The A.Claudia broad beans behind the peas were 9 to a square... they produced quite few beans but next time I would only do 4 per square as the plants are quite bulky and were hard to contain plus they got chocolate spot and I wonder if it was poor air circulation that contributed. To the left of the broad beans were 9 oregon sugarsnap pea plants and these produced well.

        I did corn in a recyclying tub sized container (8 per tub) a year or so before and got some really nice cobs, if I grow again it will be in tubs as they drink a lot of water.

        I loved square foot gardening last year and am using this method again this year. Good luck!
