Hello Headfry, sometimes onions start splitting or doubling due to the ground being dry while the bulbs are forming. As for caring for them as long as there is no other problems with the onions, leave them till harvest time, but i don't think they will store well.
    good Diggin, Chuffa.

Splitting will be due to a spurt in growth, which may have been caused by numerous reasons. If the top have gone over and they are of a reasonable size I would be inclined to lift them to stop any more splitting. It is possible for slugs, pests and desease to get into the split and cause other problems.

MIne have been bent over for about 6-8 weeks and are still growing fine, pulled one up yesterday to check they are ok but still cant see any issues.
Maybe just let them be and see how things go, any sign of any other damage then maybe start to lift??
