Hi all im trying to plan my onion spacing does 6 inch between onions and 8 inch between rows sound ok, or can i plant closer or do i need a bit more space

If they are in a bed, then you can get away with a 4 inch grid. You only leave the row space if there are actual rows [like on a non-bed allotment].

Don't forget you will need to hoe them.
Depends on how weedy you beds are.
So the more space the better on my plot!

If in a narrow raised bed then onions can be planted closer together because it's easy to kneel at side of bed and be able to reach all parts of it and hand weed.
If they're just in a bed that is; 'the part of the veg. plot where onions are growing' then, like Jimmy says, leave a little more room to get in there with the hoe.
I always plant about 22 cm / 9 inches apart in the row and about 45cm / 18 inches between rows. I know that's a lot of space but I like to be able to walk between the rows with the hoe. Wider spacing encourages larger onions.It is the doom of man, that they forget.Comment

Work out what size your smallest hoe is and add a inch and that is your spacing not forgeting if they are in rows you have to walk between....jacob

No chance of a hoe getting anywhere near my onions,I would only slice them all, its hand weed only

Cover them with a deep mulch of straw and you wont have to weed them and they dont dry out as quick as bare earthComment

4" each way for me too and hand weeding, don't want huge onions and it means I can get more in

Fotr the biggies you generally want about 8-12" between plants, a bit more if you want them to get really big adn have done the prep to get them there .... but equally you can cluster sow 4 or 5 to a module and stick them in at about 6" between clusters in rows 6" apart and they grow like big shallots....

I've got 100 sets to put out. Some will go at 4 inch spacing and some at 6 inch as I don't want big onions.Comment
