Chuck em in - you can always eat them as spring onions

following on from this...do onion sets(red baron) have to be used in this year? if i end up too late, are they wasted?...they were half price at 49p, so not that much to waste, but it would be a shame

Yes, they need to be planted ASAP, or they will start to sprout anyway, or rot.

I only planted my yellow onions last week (Friday 2nd May) as we didn't have space cleared for them before that. I am hoping they will do ok in the end as these are the ones for storage for winter use. I have autumn sown onions that I will have to start using soon, as the last string of last summer's harvest was taken in from the shed yesterday - but I have been told that these don't store well (for a few weeks but not for the winter IYKWIM), and some red ones that went in about 6 weeks ago (I think) - but again, I found that the reds didn't store nearly as well as the yellows throught he winter so I finished those shortly after Christmas.

One of the old boys on my site told me that they will grow alright, but may not be as large as last years' harvest and may also be later when I am taking them up (but i have the autumn ones to keep me going til then).

            Hope that's sopme help.
