Onion set help please

  • Onion set help please

    OK then boys and girls

    As you all know i,ve not been at this long so please bear with me,I have been given some Onion sets (Sorry dont know what sort they are ) did not manage to get them planted so

    1st of all can i save them and how ?(At the moment i have them in a dark cool draw)

    And secoundly how do i plant them up and what time of year is best.

    I would think they were supposed to be autumn planted japanese onion sets but you could either plant them now in a cold greenhouse or wait til the spring and give them a try outdoors
    They may be a failure either way though so make sure you get some spring planting sets and plant those as a backup......in spring!

      I'd get a seed tray, and sow them as spaced out as you can in that. Then put them out in the spring. At least then you might get a few bulbing up.

        Very good advice above, Ian, I think you have to chance your luck! It would help somewhat if you knew WHEN these sets were originally purchased, Spring or Autumn 2009? And from where? (e.g. mail order, seed company, garden centre, Wilkos etc). And are they white, yellow or red? bb.
