  • Ominous Tattie Problems

Just moved house yesterday, and had a look at the tatties I planted a while ago in the garden. Most are looking great, well watered, lush foliage, earthed up and just beginning to flower. A couple however are not looking so good. One (either a Red Duke Of York or an Anya) is just simply yellow, no lesions on the leaves but just looking like it is lacking something. It is at the end of a row, surrounded by weeds, I wondered if it was just suffering from too much competition. There was a healthy looking neighbouring plant had a single lesion in the middle of one leaf, similar to the dockens nearby, but no other signs of blight and no blight conditions recently, so I doubt it is even early blight.
Much worse, is a plant with curly leaves. (A Sante, I am pretty sure.) Looks ill from a mile off, and close up the foliage is not only rolled up to show the silver underside, but the stems are splayed and there is an ugly black blotch at the bottom of the stems where they enter the soil.
Normally I would just google or consult my gardening texts, but everything is higgledy piggeldy and I'm just not organised for it ! Anyone have any ideas of what may have caused this, or what I should do ? Does it need urgent treatment or can I leave it a few days while I finish off decorating in my last flat ?
    Any help gratefully received !

I have dug up all my red Duke of York as the foliage had died down naturally. They are a first early!

Sounds like blackleg on the one with the black base Royal Horticultural Society | Advice Search | Potato blackleg

If you have a look on the Blight thread, there's a couple of links to the Potato Council pages with lots of disease info

Thanks for the speedy reply guys ! Sarzwix, going by the Potato Council disease viewer (that I couldn't remember the name of !) I think it is stem canker. I planted them late just as the last frosts were happening, they got a lot of rain early on, some of the tatties never managed to get the sprouts out of the ground - it is light sandy soil. All the warning signs were there, I should have been prepared. Oh well, better pull 'em up quick smart and hope it doesn't spread. My other tatties back in Aberdeen, I am worrying about blight...cripes, who would have thought growing tatties could be so nail bitingly exciting ? !

I was sold duke of york as a main crop.
Have just harvested them from their compost bag.

Your Red Duke of York are maybe just ready Snohare. I've already eaten mine.

              Hey Kenny

I plated our Red Duke of York spuds in large pop up garden tidy sacks in March. They yellowed and fell over about 3 or 4 weeks ago and we've been eating them since then - had some with a home made chicken pie tonight. Not a huge yield but very tasty.
