  • Old sheets as weed suppressant?

Hello. I have one king size sheet and one single duvet cover with worn-through patches in them that my seamstress mother has said are pretty much unrepairable. My step-daughter suggested using them for weed-suppressant. I think that sounds like a great idea - I have large pieces of cardboard and various outcrops of newspaper in my veg patch in the name of suppressing weeds - or am I missing something and actually it's a rotten idea?
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

Not strong enough, and won't keep the light out. Sorry!

Fair enough. On that basis, would it make good 'netting'?

Probably not, wouldn't let enough light through for crops to grow. Would make good dusters or cleaning cloths though

If you double or trebled it up and sewed up the sides, they'd make good bags for storing potatoes, perhaps?

Thanks for the suggestions. I won't have much trouble finding ways to use it up, but weed-suppressing measures are uppermost in my mind atm!

It won't work, take it form one who's tried

Even if you can block out the light, the couch grass will still grow through it.

Amazingly, couch grass is about one thing I don't have in my veg patch. I had it two gardens ago and spent ages digging it all out, only to have twice as much the following year

We keep our potatoes in a large cardboard box in the garage, with a cloth loosely over it. And until I took the rear mats out of my car before scrapping it, used to use one folded up for kneeling.

Looks like you'll be finding other uses for it MrsC - use your cardboard for the weeds
