  • Now that made me cry

I've been chopping onions for over 40 years and they've never really bothered me, but I've just chopped an onion I grew myself and my eyes were streaming. What joy!

I love that feeling - the tears when chopping home grown onions can't be matched.

You just wonder what is missing from shop bought ones....

I found it helps to put them in the fridge and chill them thoroughly before chopping them up.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I'll remember that Jeanie - this one I took straight from the drying rack in the stayput!

They could have been extra weak onions though, I made French onion soup with them!

I find taking my spec's off helps delay the effects a bit

I would have thought the snorkel (with goggles) would be protection enough BB

I could do with borrowing some flippers. It would get me out of washing the dishes if I couldn't get near the sink.

Read somewhere that if you submerge peeled onions in water for a wee while, they do not sting the eyes so much when the onions are later sliced. Can't say i have noticed a significant difference, bmut it may be worth a try?

Thank you UU, that's very thoughtful of you, but I really don't mind, it's just so thrilling to have good, big, strong, tasty onions for the first time. I've grown them before, but not as successfully as this year
