  • Nourishing onions

Hi All - I've been searching threads for a while, but can't find what I'm looking for. I have cleared some ground and a raised bed for onions and garlic. My question is should I "nourish" the soil with anything before they go in, or will this encourage bolting?

If you have it, a handful of bonemeal per square yard/metre raked in to the surface will give a wee bit of phosphate to aid root developement.

Just thinking, I have far more interest now shopping for bonemeal, sulphate of ammonia, potash, fish blood and bone and chicken manure pellets than I have ever had for flour, butter, sugar, etc!

Don't confuse the chicken manure for flour.... you'll be baking terrible cakes if you do.....

Also on a horticultural point, give the onions a big top dressing of BFB toward the end of March to get them growing away strongly then....

Never been any good with cakes Chris - more of a bread chef - too heavy handed for cakes and pastry. Probably why I grow decent cauliflowers and cabbages 'cause they need a firm hand! I'll top dress as you have suggested, thanks.
