  • My Top 10 Successful Veg

    Evening Grapes

Ive been thinking of the most successful veg Ive grown now and over the years, so here it is. If anyone would like to post theirs, it would be interesting to see and compare them and the location. It might help newbies decide what to grow too.

    In no order

    Potatoes
    Tomatoes
    Runner Beans
    French Beans
    Onions
    Garlic
    Courgettes
    Carrots
    Leeks
    Sprouts

    Cheers
    braders...

Mine would be, in order of success:
    Leeks
    Potatoes
    Beetroot
    Runner beans
    Cauliflower
    Peppers
    Tomatoes
    Cucumber
    Celery
    Carrots

I define success in terms of yield, ease of growth and resistance to pests/disease. Lots of other stuff grown as well with varying degrees of success. Would have put onions in there but this years crop was a complete disaster.

Purple sprouting broccoli (kept sprouting faster than I could eat the stuff)
Cos lettuce (was meant to be mini but leaves grew to about 18")
Senshyu onions (full of flavour and no sign of bolting)
Peas (taste is fantastic and still cropping)
Aquadulce Broad Beans (overwintered gave a fantastic crop)
Flamboyant Sabina radishes (if you like 'em hot, fantastic)
        Turnip (liven up any stew)
Carrots (various varieties, no sign of carrot fly this year so good crops)
Kale (still growing and looking good)
Beetroot (would have been higher on the list but I left them in the ground too long ad they went a bit woody, my fault)

Difficult to come up with a top ten as there are plenty of veg that have provided me with more than enough of a harvest but then I only have two mouths to feed.

Peas have been outstanding and am still picking them
              Broad beans
              Runner beans
              Turnip
              Cabbages
              Tomatoes
              Cucumber
              Peppers Sweet and chilli
              Garlic
              Lettuce

Have not included parsnips, leeks and winter brassicas as there are good crops of them but haven't started to harvest them yet.

                Top for this year are:

                Courgettes
                Tomatoes
                Broad beans
Chillies (first time growing them, Jalapenos)
                Onions
                Pumpkin
Parsnips (just a small number but a good size, being left in the ground for the first frost)
Cucumber (a gift plant from a friend, did well)
Beetroot - not ready for picking yet, but looks like it's doing fine
CCA lettuce - well, it grew like mad and it makes up the ten
My hopes are not always realized but I always hope (Ovid)
