  • My brussels are on crack!

or something... I sowed some up along with other stuff late on Saturday, and they've already germinated, and are about 1/3 of an inch tall! How exciting! They're Evesham Special - let's see if I can be more successful with sprouts this year. Last year's never got a single sprout on them lol

Fingers crossed for you Sarriss. I had my first home grown sprouts at Christmas and I was amazed at the taste. Going to try red ones this year as well.

Something I've never tried and never will! The family like them but it's my plot and unless they're going to grow them they'll have to make do with shop ones. I can remember sowing some French marigolds in the greenhouse at home when I was in my early teens and they germinated the next day. Got me hooked! I'm currently waiting for some sweet peas to germinate in the greenhouse, bit of promised warmth later in the week might kick start them.

It's a buzz isn't it, when things germinate that fast? My daughter was very excited to see that the shop bought dried peas that she put into a plastic tub with some compost started moving about the day after! They take longer to come up properly, but there was movement almost instantly.
We grow them semi-regularly for pea shoots - so delicious in the middle of the winter

I can definetly recommend home grown sprouts for christmas dinner, Chrimbo afternoon I went out with a large serrated knife and felled my mighty Sprout plant. I can't stand sprouts but wether it was the frost or what these tasted almost sweet and I just wished I had grown 2 plants.

I have the opposite - my Mum hates sprouts normally but loves the sprouts I grew last year, so even though I worked out the prepared shop bought ones are cheaper (and easier) than seedling sprouts, I will be growing them this year From seed though - more economic.

This is a lovely recipe for people who don't like brussels - Brussels with hustle recipe - Channel4 - 4Food - lovely, even without the bacon.

I went to the lottie Christmas Eve to fell my largest sprout plant. Hilarious - I took a kitchen knife with me which failed to make even a dent in the stem. So instead (lacking any tools at the lottie) I spent 10 minutes pulling the thing bodily out of the ground - leaning my full weight on it! I was quite glad it was dark - would have looked very odd!

I steamed mine for 10mins then fried them off in butter, pepper and bacon for 5 mins and then a quick dab with the kitchen towel as they came out so not overly greasy.
