gutted to find out that my lovely onions are going mushy in storage. anyone else finding this

Looks like some sort of rot. Were they dried off properly before storing. Esp the roots. Any worms or maggots or soft areas round the roots? -
I've left mine in the shed for a fortnight. Only lost a couple to (white) rot. Still, not a brilliant harvest

No problems so far but it's early days yet. Most of mine are still drying and I won't put them in the net sacks till I'm absolutely certain they're completely dry.Comment

Can't say my harvest has been up to much and made some onion marmalade as alot seemed to be rotting round the neck.Mad Old Bat With Attitude.
I tried jogging, but I couldn't keep the ice in my glass.Comment

Not stored mine yet but quite a few of them are rather small so they'd best not rot!

Mine are still drying in the greenhouse. I had a top-tip from one of the 'old girls' on the allotment to put them upside down on wire racks for the final bit of drying which is supposed to help prevent rotting from the centre. Dunno if it works though beccause this is the first time I've tried it.Comment

Did they have thicker necks than the other onions hawthorns? If they bolt before storage it can leave them with a thick neck that allows disease to take hold more easily. I only ask as the rot seems to start at the centres suggesting that it has entered from the neck.Originally posted by hawthorns View Post
I'd suggest it was a botrytis infection given the symptoms.

some of my shallots went the same way & i've now pickled the remaining ones to prevent it getting worse.don't be afraid to innovate and try new things
