Just bought some mushroom compost can this be used in the carrot bed that I have, also if I throw on the plot where I have put loads of organic matter in will I harm the worms.

Hi Kittykat.
Most authorities advise against putting carrots into recently manured ground asit can cause the roots to split.
As for harming your worms, on the contrary, I think they'll think it's Chritmas! Use it as a mulch over an area where you are going to grow something "greedy" like courgettes or tomatoes, or put it in the bottom of the trench or hole ( or bag) when you plant potatoes.

Should be good on the brassica bed as it is very alkaline I'm led to believe!
I think lime is added to horsemuck and peat to grow the mushrooms in?
Sadly, we have no mushroom farms around here but I have often wondered if the spent compost is sold off really, really cheaply?

I thought it was a bad idea to add lime to horse muck...not sure where I read that or why that was.
Also, isn't it only bad to add manure to carrots because it's acidic, whereas mushroom compost is alkaline (As our MOM already mentioned)Current Executive Board Members at Ollietopia Inc:

I'd not use mushroom compost on spuds and I wouldn't use anything "bulky" on carrots.... spuds tend to get scabby if they're limed (and mushroom compost has a lot of lime in it) carrots tend to fork in soils with a lot of freshish organic matter in it. It's realy good for things like brassicas (becasue of the lime) and OK for things like squash and tomatoes....
Pies, where do you get 700 litres for a tenner?.... that would do all my brassicas this year in one go....
