    Minipop sweetcorn

    I've noticed that people seem to have issues with this, but we've just harvested our first load today and it is amazing. But what I was surprised about was how quickly the cob went from just starting to poke out above the leaf to pickable size- 2 weeks max, and those ones were strictly speaking a little too large I think.

    I don't know if that helps at all? You're supposed to pick them pretty much as soon as the silk is fully out. Anyway I thought I'd mention it in case anyone was leaving it too long to pick them.

    They were kind of fun to 'unwrap' as well!

      well, I thought I'd just unwrap one and see... and lo and behold there they were.

      But I really was surprised by the speed the cobs grew, once they got going. Literally, I went on holiday last week to corn stalks with a few titchy tufts that I thought 'oooh, interesting, is that going to be a cob then?' (remember I've never grown corn before lol) and came back a week later to a lovely cob with a full head of hair lol containing what turned out to be supermarket sized mini corn. Which i presume is the appropriate size!

        Hi bethduckie. How many corn are you getting on average per plant. Just on a curiosity note.

          they've only just started producing corn, but some of the ones I pulled a corn from yesterday had new ones growing already, so hopefully a fair few. Someone on here said they got 4-ish per plant, and whilst that does seem like a pretty poor return... well like anything else some crops you grow for money, others you grow for taste and so on, don't you? I suppose it depends on how long the sun lasts- this was my second sowing as my bad cat Theo ate the first little seedlings!

          I love corn plants, I think they are tall and stately and add variety and structure to an allotment so the fact they produce yumminess too is making me very happy indeed
