    Hi!

Has anyone any useful tips on how to avoid Lettuce root aphid? I lost many lettuces last year as a result of this pest in ground not previously planted with lettuces. I had hoped to use Derris on the soil but alas this has now been withdrawn. Any suggestions anyone?

If you start your lettuces off in modules under some sort of cover and plant them in the soil when about 3 inches tall, you may find they are less surceptible to the aphids as they are more mature.

Thanks for your advice. Sadly I always have started my lettuce in modules anyway!!

What about not putting it in the ground at all, and keeping it in pots?

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
