    May have overdone the canes

    Planted out some climbing French beans last night - a dwarf variety called "Box".

    It was only after planting them that the following occured to me; does dwarf relate to the size of the bean pod, or is it the size of the plant?

    If it's the latter I think 7ft canes may be slightly more than required.

      So glad I am not the only one! I made a cute four foot A frame for mine. This caused much hilarity amongst my more knowledgeable friends, (you know who you are!)

        Just stick a few climbing beans like Blue Lake in as well to hide your embarassment!

          Aha! Thought as much - no, honest I did!

          Thankfully the wigwam took all of 5 minutes to erect, and will take less time to dismantle.

          I did inted to plant the runner beans, but took the wrong ones with me last night, so I'll take out the wigwam, move it 3ft, re-erect it and plant the runners in it instead.

          They say dwarf - but with only their seed leaves they are about a foot tall already. I'm guessing they bush out a bit?

            Yup, they bush out a little. Mine all look the same at first so it is just as well I label them (then cross fingers they don't fall off the shelves)

                Yeah, do that as the dwarfs also die out sooner....once the beans are harvested....whilst the climbers last much longer. It looks like a work of genuis and interplanting if you do that.

                  Nice one, good to know we all do that, i have done the same with some sugar snap peas, although they do need canes i really dont think they need them as high as i've gone you can see my wigwam for miles, OH keeps joking that we should just throw a blanket over it and we've got a 2nd home. Am going to cut my canes and use them elsewhere in garden.

                          Heh, I did this last year too - half a frame ended up climbers and the other half was dwarf beans and it all looked rather depressing.

                          This year I um, Planned, mixing the two. Yep, planned. Utterly. Didn't forget to label the pots at all at planting, nope, not at all!

                            I've got a 5 foot wigwam for my runner beans, one plant has reached the top, what do I do now, can I cut the top off?
                            Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that, I'll be over

                              Use a sharp knife and cut it.

                              I would personally use bigger canes for runners - but as previously demonstrated I have a thing for big canes!
