  • Mangetout - Indoor vs outdoor and feeding

    Hi,
I've had a lovely crop of mangetout in the tunnel. Sweet as you like. They are finishing up now but I have outdoor ones cropping to take over. The outdoor ones are nowhere near as nice or sweet. They are both oregon sugar snap. I wonder do indoor crops fair better in general/are tastier? I notice also that the outdoor ones have large pods but the peas inside are tiny. So do peas need to be fed? I'm confused why they are turning out different.
    Thanks

Once established, peas are pretty tough plants...although there are many varieties for different harvest times, most enjoy it not too hot. Sugar snaps (which I pedantically think Oregon are... rather than a true 'mange tout'?) tend to enjoy warmth this possibly causing them too sweeten up. With the season we've had!... no wonder the ones in the polytunnel are better. The outdoors just need a few days of warmth to ripen them up I suspect.

They shouldn't need feeding but a good loam with organic matter keeps their feet damp - which they like

Thanks Paulottie. I'll keep sampling and see if some sunshine (if we ever get it back) sweetens them up. Loving them. Will be sowing successionaly next year in smaller batches to have lots in the tunnel.
