  • Male/Female Cucumber Flowers

    Hi all,

How can I tell the difference between male or female flowers on Cucumbers? I read that the female have a small fruit and the male doesn't, but does anybody have photographs of each?

    Thank you for your help.

You don't really need a photo, the male flower has a skinny stem and the female one has a tiny cucumber, much thicker than the stem on the male flower. Usually the male flowers appear first (unless you are growing an all-female f1 variety in which case you may not see any male flowers.

If you look at your flowers, the female has the small fruit underneath as per photo in link. Cucumber - Flower

The male flowers tend to drop off where the female flowers stay attached to the blossom end of the Cucumber.

Just wanted to say that I found this thread very useful. My cucumbers are flowering and today I noticed the difference between male and female... I have quite a few tiny cucumbers forming - very exciting.
