  • Luna Planting - just starting out

Based on the excellent thread here. I've decided to try some biodynamic veggie growing, and thought that i should start my own thread, otherwise I'd just clutter up VVG's thread with my naive questions

I'm not only new to this lunar planting, but I'm new to planting in general, so while I'm more than happy for any questions, please don't expect a good answer

I'm using the following website to know what 'element' I should be planting The Gardeners Calendar, and this Moon Calendar.

The very basic principle is that food is split into four categories/elements: Earth (root), Air (Flower), Fire (Fruit) and Water (Leaves). Depending on what constellation the moon is in depends on what you should sow... Simples, right

So, I've already planted 8 cloves of garlic on Thursday, which was an 'Earth' day, then went to the garden centre today to stock up, 25 packets of seeds, 2 blackberry and 2 raspberry bushes later, I'm ready.

    What I have:

    EARTH/ROOT:
    Garlic (already in)
    Parsnip
    Spring Onion
    Onion
    Swede
    Beetroot
    Carrot
    Leek

    WATER/LEAVES:
    Lettuce
    Spinach
    Swiss Chard
    Kale
    Salad Leaves (mixed seeds)
    Brussel Sprouts
    Cabbage

    AIR/FLOWER:
    Cauliflower
    Broccoli

    FIRE/FRUIT:
    Pepper
    Chilli Pepper
    Sweet Pepper
    Tomato (2 types)
    Melon
    Butternut Squash
    Squash
    Cucumber

Please bear in mind that I may have made mistakes in the classifications of seeds above.

They'll be grown on widowsills/containers/raised beds, wherever there's space! Maybe a plastic greenhouse.

Yep, I'll still popup on the LP thread to ask stupid questions, you won't be free of me for a while yet

Seed packets sorted into categories, just need to look up the types of soil that they all like to be grown in next... then... start sowing based on the day.

Oh, and I've managed to accumulate about a dozen (or more) toilet rolls, perfect for the carrots, unless it's not an Earth day, in which case they may be used up for something else.

On the recylcle thred, I read about folding the loo rolls in half and then in half again. This way you can store quite a few inside one, saving storage space and when you open then up, they are quadrillateral in shape and will pack up close to one another. It makes them much easier to fill in the tray.

PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!

Good idea, just folded them into each other, 4 fit neatly inside 1 tube, which also makes them easy to count 20 in total.

The first garlic shoot has made an appearance today, with another just slightly showing under the soil

6 days to show, not sure if that's quick or not, but another 6 plants to wait for... *looks at watch, checks them again... nope*
